Link Found Between America’s Most Popular Herbicide and Cancer

In recent years, more and more information has come to the surface linking the use of the popular herbicide Roundup to cancers such as non-Hodgkin lymphoma. However, despite the new science, Monsanto, the original producer of Roundup, is digging their heals in and refusing to warn people of the dangers associated with using their product. As a result, thousands of people around the country may have been (and continue to be) exposed to health risks from using the herbicide.

The link between Roundup and certain cancers is so strong that there are currently upwards of 9,000 lawsuits active against Monsanto because of Roundup. While no one expects the fight against Monsanto (a corporation with nearly unlimited resources) to be easy, the attorneys at Baird Mandalas Brockstedt, LLC are confident truth will prevail.
What exactly is Roundup and how is it linked to cancer?

Roundup is the most popular herbicide in America and used frequently by municipalities, nurseries, farms and golf courses to root out weeds and other unwanted plants. Although ever since it was first introduced to the market by Monsanto in the 1970’s, the company has claimed that there are no adverse health effects associated with using the product, more and more evidence is being released that shows otherwise.

For example, in 2015 the World Health Organization conducted a study on glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup. Drawing on years of government data, peer-reviewed journals and their own studies, they concluded that glyphosate is “probably carcinogenic to humans,” and that the use of Roundup could be linked to the cancer non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and its subsidy cancers such as Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, Chronic follicular lymphoma, and B cell or T Cell NHL.

Not only has the World Health Organization come down hard against the herbicide and provided the public with valuable public information that should deter future use of Roundup, more and more victims are coming forward and winning cases against Monsanto. Earlier this year a California man who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma was awarded an $80 million claim when a jury in San Francisco found that Roundup was a “substantial factor” in causing the man’s cancer. This verdict came only months after another California court found Roundup responsible for the cancer of a school groundskeeper and awarded him close to $80 million as well.

While one might think these big settlements would cause Monsanto to change its tone about the dangers of their popular herbicide, that hasn’t been the case. Instead, Monsanto continues fighting lawsuits across the country and does nothing to warn customers of the dangers of Roundup.

If you believe you were exposed to a Roundup product and have also been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma or are experiencing symptoms, it’s important that you contact an experienced environmental law attorney as soon as possible.

WHO'S AT RISK AND WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF non-HODGKIN LYMPHOMA?

Every year nearly 100,000 Americans develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma and its subtype cancers. When treated in its early stages, many people make full recoveries. However, it’s important that it be discovered in its early stages so that typical treatment such as chemotherapy, radiation and immunotherapy can be effective. While limited exposure to Roundup may cause adverse health effects, the risks are drastically increased for people whose occupations cause them to experience high exposure to the herbicide. Some of the occupations that commonly experience high exposure to Roundup include:
  • Agriculture laborers and farmers
  • Professional or serious gardeners
  • Garden nursery staff
  • Golf course maintenance employees
  • Landscapers
  • Parks and forestry employees
  • Sports field and turf management employees
  • Lawn maintenance staff
  • Horticulture experts
Exposure to Roundup can occur by breathing it in, skin contact or ingestion. If you’ve worked in any of these occupations and believe you have been exposed to Roundup, it’s important to learn about the symptoms of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and visit a doctor if you suspect an illness. Below are some of the symptoms of non-Hodgkin lymphoma to look for:
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Abdominal and/or chest pain
  • Trouble breathing/ shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Night sweats
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Feeling full after consuming very little
  • Easy bruising
  • Frequent or severe infections
If you are experiencing some of these symptoms, it’s important not to panic. Because the range of symptoms associated with NHL are so wide, you should not assume you have NHL just because you’re experiencing one or more of these symptoms. Still, if you notice symptoms of non-Hodgkin lymphoma you should take the necessary precautions and visit your doctor right away.

Furthermore, if you or a loved one was exposed to Roundup herbicide and subsequently diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma or leukemia, it’s in your best interest to call an experienced environmental lawyer as soon as possible to discuss filing a claim for your suffering. Waiting too long can jeopardize your case, since the statute of limitation on such cases means there is a limited time for victims to file claims for their suffering.
